mochi

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

holy shit, so work is crazier than it’s ever been. delirious and frazzled, i’m trying to sort it all out and knock items off my to-do list, one by one. it’s hard though, to get into the “mode” and find my mojo. it’s like my synapses aren’t firing.

HOWEVER, dear friend and tezuka exhibition comrade nicole just came around my cluttered work trench and resuscitated me with the most sumptuous, darling cloud of mochi.

interestingly enough, this was the very same kind of mochi (made by chikara) that i had been eyeing covetously a few weeks ago at cherry blossom. white with pink and green stripes, and desirable b/c it lacked any filling (which i find cloying and distracting). these are actually quite rare.

plain, sweet, fluffy, puffy mochi. yessssssssssss…

ps – after trolling nippon-ya (japantown) countless times, i finally committed to purchasing a box of green tea mochi filled with chocolate cream. it’s like the mochi gods knew exactly what i wanted.

shohei imamura at the PFA

warm water under a red bridge

who’s excited about the upcoming shohei imamura retro at the PFA?
i am, i am. starts may 25, runs through june 30. sounds far away, but it’s basically right around the corner.

here’s something to work up an appetite, pulled from the PFA’s website:

“The Japanese master Shohei Imamura (1926–2006) is famous for the controversial subject matter and raw energy of his films. Imamura’s Japan is a sensual and often cruel universe untouched by the tea ceremony, Zen, or conventional gentility. In Imamura’s universe, Japanese women are not long-suffering, modest females, but survivors-self aware, self-serving, and sexual. Imamura’s films are ‘obviously the work of a supremely assured artist, and one who is at home with his (and our) most basic instincts.’ ”

i saw the eel a long, long time ago and remember enjoying it.
also, i have a small crush on koji yakusho. he’s got the 80s-90s ryuichi sakamoto ruggedness going on.

so, who wants to get their shohei imamura on with me? schedule.
i hope to make as many as i possibly can.
this sounds like a wonderful program.

as does this!
