T-8
One of the absolute best moments of my life was walking at night and stumbling upon a pseudo-flash mob of ballroom dancing at the backside of the forbidden city. There were at least a couple rusty bikes outfitted with speaker systems, and dozens of healthy, happy, older people just delighted to get their dance on on a Friday night, 10pm-ish. Believe me, I saw some sweet rug cutting. The scene made me deliriously happy.

yo jenn what’s up. i didn’t know you were in beijing! are you doing a whole cruise around east asia thing? i actually lived in beijing for a bit too. if you get the chance and are still there you should check out this live venue called d-22, which is where all the rad spastic / experimental / crazy punk / whatever bands play. there is some good punk stuff at this place called mao live right near nanluoguxiang too. i cant really remember the names of most of the places i used to eat at in beijing, but there is this badass yang rou pao mo / lamb soup place near xizhimen called xian something or other that has been there for like 60 years that rules. my favorite restaurant was san ge guizhou ren, its sorta fancy and there are a couple of them all around; crazy good and hellllla spicy guizhou / miao / hmong food. eat some sichuan hot pot for me too!
when exactly are you gonna be in tokyo? i actually am going back to the states for a pretty good chunk of september, so its possible it might be a two bodies passing in the rye kind of situation., which would be a bummer – im gonna be in sacramento, mammoth, and SF from the 3rd-23rd. if were here at the same time, then fuck yeah lets eat some noodles! if not, i can hook you up with good directions to some of the places ive blogged that look good to you. im hoping ryan can help me set up one of those googlemap things like he has for samehat…

Hey Nate! Thanks for your comment!
Actually I was in China two years ago. Just posting pix from the trip as a count down to my departure next week. It really sucks that you won’t be around when I land in Japan. I was super hoping I could have a comrade in arms in crazy eating. BUMMER. Really too bad.
Wish I could’ve used your recs when I was in China too. d-22 sounds so cool. I never even got to eat hot pot there.
Dang.

Is that top picture for real? It looks too perfect, too precise, like a Photoshop drawing. I guess it’s real. Sure, it’s real. It’s sure real. Get it? Do I have to spell it?

Paul, I guess I just got lucky with that picture. It’s not that great! And no you don’t have to spell it out you punny person.
