October thus far

Highlights! And I’m not talking about the Scholastic magazine either…

* I enjoyed the splendor of breathtaking Big Sur with the San Hos earlier in the month for our annual local getaway. We had a spacious (though slightly creepy) cabin, in which we overdosed on junk food, magazines, and soulful conversation. Photos.

* Finally got some quality time in with the sister sister. She took me to Montalvo Center for the Arts — it was my first time! We had a blast just running around being goofs and enjoying the manicured grounds. Afterwards we ate at Bella Saratoga — a pretty good restaurant whose somewhat cheesy romantic facade belies its quality fare. Photos.

* Introduced Grandma to Holder’s Country Inn. Specifically: Swedish pancakes, cinnamon rolls, and scrambles. She really liked everything that she sampled! I’m thinking we need to take her out more for meals. Btw, my dad took her and my sister to go watch UP a few months ago. I think it wasn’t a bad time for her.

* I shot some food for new restaurant Ironside, in the same building as Chronicle Books down in SoMA. It was a rewarding experience. Photos.

* Finally got to spend some time with close pals, which I guess I can collectively refer to as the Bang Gang. It was satisfying to be able to make some small dishes for everyone and just do stuff together in the kitchen. I love cooking but I never have time (or make time?) to do it. I hate that about myself. Photos.

* APE!!! Ahhh, like homecoming. I can write more about that later, but basically I spoke (more like talked for 2 minutes tops) on a panel cuz I’m a comics nerd who happens to work at a museum that happened to have an exhibition on Tezuka. The best part — other than the honor — was sitting next to freakin’ PHOEBE GLOECKNER, whose works impacted me in a huge way. She’s so quirky and lovely, and also fidgety with her camera. APE is always a grand ol’ time. Makes me happy just to hang with the Bang Gang and see old friends. Photos.
