Cinnamon

One of my favorite things about fall is the sudden overflowing abundance of persimmons. Any stand at any farmers market proudly boasts baskets and boxes bursting with them. Persimmons are one of my beloved fruits. They are so delectable and autumnal. Just a few weeks ago, I started eating them with the skin on for the first time. “Like an apple,” as some farmers market vendors have said.

ps – speaking of persimmons, here’s a gorgeous haunting poem that features them somewhat. Introduced to me by Peg. Here’s an excerpt:

“Some things never leave a person:
scent of the hair of one you love,
the texture of persimmons,
in your palm, the ripe weight.”

Persimmons are new to me, and I just discovered that my co-worker’s (Jonathan Chan) parents have a small persimmon orchard! I told him if he brought me the persimmons, I would make a pie for us all to share, so I’d love recipes if anyone has one.

hmm, they are dense little bastards. But I’m more fond of the texture in my mouth. That grainy, sandy sweetness.

I’m munching on one right now! My parents’ tree produceth. I still can’t get used to eating the skin on them, though.

    Yay, persimmons!

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR DEAR COMMENTS! Wheeee

@Biggletron Oooh, consider yourself lucky. Do you like them? I’ve never heard of or tried persimmon pie, but it could be very, very tasty, especially made by your hands. Lemme know if you do it okay? Report back!

@Alison YAY. I remember that post on your blog.

@Ben “Dense” is a good word to describe them. But they’re not sandy. Quite smooth actually.

@Andrea Lucky you! How auspicious to have a persimmon tree at your parents house. I’ve gotten used to the skin only cuz I’m too lazy to peel.

Ooooh yeaaaah! I forgot we share this joy. My mom and I have been collecting them where ever we go….mmm mmm mmm. My peeps at work eat them with the skin, too! I’m gonna try it, but don’t think I will convert. Although, peeling them and then cutting them often cause me to lose a few of those slippery suckers. Go get ‘em!
