dunno what it is about this thing that makes me so giddy. it’s oddly adorable, yet a tad bit unnervingly creepy too. kinda looks like how i feel. strange, peculiar, ugly, but keeping its head up in knowing that it must be lovable to someone, somewhere.

staring at the sea, staring at the sand

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

imagine that, for whatever fortuitous circumstances, you were at stinson beach yesterday soaking up the sun, a respite from the usual SF fog. you’re on a rendezvous, or maybe you and your friends spontaneously drove out there right after work. your legs breathe in the gentle breeze, smooth sand tickles the webbing between your toes, and you don’t care where you left your flip flops because you’re caught up in the lovely sunset.

and then, before the sun has completely descended into the horizon, this happens. the ultimate killjoy.

every designer has a muse

so THAT’S where they got it! this logo always struck me as, at best, smart and catchy, and at worst, mediocre. it’s always so inspirational to know how designers come up with their creations.

mourn ya til i join ya

ain’t nothin’ like being greeted by a headless pigeon as you enter a park.

DOA, alamo square park

this carnage was found on the top of the steps of alamo square park, corner of steiner and fulton. a bit startling and suspicious. any non-human predator responsible for this wouldn’t have just…left the thing in such obvious, plain sight…right? seems a bit weird. but nature has its moments too.

you know how cats and dogs often bring home vermin corpses as gifts to their masters? maybe the culprit did this as like, an offering to the quaint neighborhood? oh well.

or maybe that’s the exact spot where the incident occurred. maybe a dog pounced right there and then, before its mortified owner snapped it out of its natural, frenzied prey-driven state.

one chinese netizen’s artistic take on sino-U.S. relations:

given the current all-eyes-on-china affairs, is this aggressive and nationalistic, subversive and inflammatory, or good ol’ fashioned fun? or all of the above? this piece is begging to be captioned. c’mon guys, it’s captioning time! i know you all can come up with some witty, naughty nuggets.

ps – notice how liberty’s nipple is grazing the warrior’s breast plate ever so gingerly. oooh la la!

pop goes the pipa pipa

remember that sick creature i alluded to in my NYC #2 post?

here you can see actual babies popping out of the deep pits in their mom’s back. what’s interesting is that they’re exact miniature versions of her. it’s riveting, but oh-so-deeesgusting, reminiscent of the “honeycomb breast.” and no you definitely should not google image that term. and if you do, don’t blame me for your lifelong post-traumatic stress disorder.

wonder what it feels like for the surinam toad (aka pipa pipa, aka star-fingered frog) baby mama?

ps – here she is as pack mule for her entire stash of eggs. EEEEEEW! double gross! ugh. what is it about seeing a slimy cluster of eggs that makes my skin crawl?

south korea’s number one national treasure was set on fire by a vengeful, angry fellow.

steve likens it to the statue of liberty going up in flames…

from the NYT article:

“Namdaemun, made of wood and stone with a two-tiered, pagoda-shaped tiled roof, was completed in 1398 and served as the main southern entrance to Seoul, which was then a walled city. It was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul, an iconic reminder of old Korea in this modern Asian city, the capital of South Korea, and a major tourist attraction. The site is surrounded by a bustling commercial district. Lately, homeless people had sought shelter there.

Namdaemun succumbed to the very thing it was designed to fight off, according to Korean legend: fire. Korean kings chose the site in the belief that the gate would protect the capital from the fiery spirit of a mountain south of Seoul, historians say.”

** UPDATE: hundreds of more photos have been leaked by a “mysterious” netizen who promises to unleash new damaging pix and video onto the web. he has even taunted HK police into tracking him down with a “catch me if you can” statement. but wait…get this — his nom de plume is kira, as in the elusive protagonist of death note. for reals? seriously? you can’t make this stuff up.

man oh man…

the edison chen scandal is perhaps a cautionary tale to remember that privacy does not exist in the digital age.

born in vancouver, he’s a huge HK star who apparently has a proclivity for documenting his bedroom romps on camera. das cool. what’s not cool though is that he stupidly stored photos on his laptop, which were discovered by slimy computer repair folks who fed them to the perpetually scandal-hungry internets. OUCH. btw, these pics are sooo NSFW. edison recently broke his silence by releasing an official statement.

i feel seriously AWFUL for these former lovers, all of which are of some celebrity status. according to an article, one has already attempted suicide. edison will most likely rebound from all this, given some time (i’m sure he’s already getting big ups from machismo morons).

but what about the girls? and their careers? i initially snickered when i was informed of this debacle (thanks, cynth!). dismissively laughing it off in my usual “celebrities are so stupid, when will they ever learn” mentality, i now find it all very grim, depressing, and traumatizing for the parties involved.

this may sound weird, but situations like these remind me that regardless of who we are, celebrity or not (and no, i don’t deify celebrities), we’re all humans when it comes to simple primordial needs. in the end, we’re funky randy creatures who subsist partly on love, affection, sex. the ways in which we express these needs are profoundly sacred and even sweet in our vulnerability and intimacy, no matter how kinky or ________. everyone gets their rocks off, but rarely is it meant for public consumption.

so if there’s anything to be learned from this “strange ordeal,” it’s that you should NEVER STORE YOUR SECRETS ON YOUR COMPUTER. for god’s sake burn that $*#! immediately onto a disc and bury it somewhere absolutely inaccessible.

ps – to end on a somewhat lighthearted note, check out edison’s blog. it’s curious how he’s so into hip hop urban culture. can’t stand the way he writes.

what are you staring at?

thank god for modern medicine.
the caption accompanying the image below reads:

“Saving face: Severely disfigured by a genetic nerve disorder, Huang Chuncai awaits a second operation to remove his massive facial tumors at ahospital in Guangzhou, China. Huang, 32, had about half of the 50.7 pounds of growth cut out in his first operation last year. The second surgery will remove another 10 pounds.”

imagine how he felt/looked BEFORE the surgeries. here are more images. proceed at your own risk. i mean it.

nature is beautiful in its ugliness (and vice versa)

…i feel queasy…

g-g-g-guh-guys? wait up!! where you going? why are you running away like that? i just…i just wanted to see…if you know, you wanted to hang out tonight and play wii. my mom’s making stovetop…and…and…and we just bought some capri sun!!!

i am equal parts delighted and terrified. this lil’ feller right here is exactly why i have such an abysmal love (deep as the sea, hyuk hyuk) for all things marine. thanks to fran for pointing this out, found on boing boing. the headline: “strange squid with human-like ‘teeth

YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN! peep the comments following that article. funny stuff.

can anyone come up with the perfect name for our aquatic pal?? somehow, i don’t think alistair or archibald would cut it. i’m thinking something more along the lines of…fred? help me out here.

geek alert: squid guy reminds me of corinthian, the sandman character. i still vividly remember being an angst-ridden, black nailpolished little punk lying on my bedroom floor, reading sandman: the doll’s house (while listening to kiss me kiss me kiss me, natch) and seeing the horrifying, disturbing image of corinthian’s face for the first time. seeing this squid brings me back.

pretty dorky, right?

but anyway, i love animals. they are fuhhh-reeeeeaky.

i’m revisiting new order and it is a real nostalgic trip. if anybody out there loves “1963,” “love vigilantes,” and “regret” as much as i do, i wanna get a cyber high-five. *slap*

things have been whirlwind these past coupla weeks. i’ve been fortunate enough to eat some tasty meals, spend time with friends, pop my opera cherry, celebrate birthdays and artistic achievements, dance with sweaty revelers, and eat some more (much to my detriment).

in other news, life continues to perplex and astound by throwing jarring things my way. little emotional land mines here and there are par for the course, but once in awhile you’ll get a big one that can jolt you out of your comfort zone and shake you to your very core.

like moz once sang, “emotional air raids exhausted my heart.”

i guess this is what life is all about.

(but life can also be about moments like these…)
